90 fishermen trained in the management of a sustainable sea-based business
The project will develop a tourism offer based on sustainable principles for fishing that are compatible with the type of marine ecosystem in the area. This sustainability can be guaranteed by those who work in the fish sector. Fishermen will be trained to improve their competencies in using appropriate fishing methods that do not damage the marine resources. Fishing tourism is oriented to achieve good practices in fishing and in consequence, an increase of the environmental consciousness of fishermen and tourists as well.
Indeed, fishing tourism could not only improve the fish chain, but also help to develop a tourism that is more respectful of the environment by making users more aware of the impact that human activities and fish production have on maritime resources. In addition, several GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean) studies showed that coastal artisanal fisheries support better sustainability and biodiversity conservation: by using small boats, more selective gear, artisanal fisheries tend to be more efficient and usually have less impact on resources compared to many industrial fisheries. Oily fish such as mackerel, sardine or herring tend to be caught by less destructive fishing methods. This will be kept into consideration by promoting sustainable food habits. The improved sustainable management of the biological resources will increase the level of environmental sustainability.
6 tourism itineraries linked to the maritime traditional heritage and valorization of local seafood products
The tourism offer will be enriched by making available new products and itineraries focused on fishing activities as instruments to connect the tourists to the fishermen real life and traditions, thus promoting an inclusive growth in the MED area. A crowd sourcing web portal will gather and promote fishing tourism activities in the Mediterranean, highlighting the socio-cultural value of maritime heritage. Tourists demand towards new attractive experiences will be satisfied by the opportunity to enter in direct contact with the local fishing community and maritime traditions; this contributes to preserve cultural identity and avoid marginalisation, while promoting the recognition of the leading role of professional fishermen in coastal areas. Fishing tourism tends to elevate the social value of fishermen work and this awareness can encourage the public to conceive fishing as a job option, helping to attract younger people to the sector. At socio-cultural level it capitalizes the heritage and tradition that artisanal fishing and its history and techniques represent in the area. Increased tourism offer based on fishing tourism itineraries and activities linked to the local cultural heritage will increase the level of social sustainability in MED coastal regions.
1 integrated fishing-tourism business model linking sustainable fishing, local natural resources and traditional products
Through the implementation of the fishing tourism model (supported through the services provided by the web-based company for the transnational implementation of the integrated fishing-tourism business model), fishermen and fishery communities will increase and diversify their sources of income thus not relying only on fishery activities which are facing a critical phase in terms of income levels and job rates. Fishing tourism can be considered as a practice able to improve the quality of life of fishermen, reduce the fishing effort and thus a better conservation of fish and marine resources, as well as a new entrepreneurial activity based on the preservation of local traditions and maritime natural heritage. This activity can provide higher incomes and possibly higher employment rates of young people and women. The new incomes generated from tourism will balance also the stop of fishery activities during the biological rest periods. Demand of fishing-tourism in summer coincides with the biological stops for several species facilitating the reorientation of the tourist fishing activity to species with fishing open, with the opportunity of higher incomes. The new activities will be tested keeping into consideration a horizontal cooperation of diverse complementary activities of the tourism, tending in the midterm to a conjoint offer, with aggregated profits for all the local community. This will increase the level of economic sustainability in MED coastal regions.
6 regional fishing tourism consortia adopting the integrated business model
Fishermen and fishery associations members involved in implementation of model will set up consortia that adopt and sustain the created fishing tourism products at regional level. The creation of organised and coordinated structures across the concerned MED regions will strengthen and rationalise actions and initiatives. The crowdsourcing web portal will play a crucial role, acting as a company promoting fishing tourism packages and providing technical consultancy to public and private actors in the implementation of the business model. In particular, regions of Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Cyprus, Albania (in a first phase) and regions of other MED territories (in a second phase) will be supported and stimulated through the activities of the web portal in creating itineraries based on fishing tourism. The joint cooperation and agreements between public authorities and fishing associations/cooperatives will increase the number of MED regions including the fishing tourism model and responsible schemes of maritime tourism connected to the local cultural heritage in their regional development plans. Moreover the web portal will act as a virtual space (open to the contribution of any interested stakeholder) to promote a recommendation for the harmonization of a regulatory framework affecting tourism related to fishing at Euro-Mediterranean level.
